#WeAreHingham

WHAT DOES COMMUNITY MEAN TO YOU?

#WeAreHingham participants say…Love, Acceptance, Connection, Harmony, Respect, Home, Compassion, Inclusion, Support, Kindness

Last year I embarked on a community based visual project aimed at sparking dialogue and fostering unity in my hometown of Hingham, MA, called #WeAreHingham. I created a website www.wearehingham.com and encouraged community members to participate.

This project stemmed from the conviction that everyone deserves to be seen, supported and celebrated.  My goal was to showcase as broad a spectrum of people as possible to ignite inquiry and discussion in the community while breaking down barriers.

Thanks to the wonderful participants, partnerships and local sponsors, the project was showcased throughout the year.  It literally took a village and I am hopeful that it made a small difference in how we see and interact with one another.

Here are some highlights:

May, 2022

Hingham Historical Society kindly hung a small banner on its front wall on Main St. before and after its community music and food event, Springham, during which a larger banner hung on the side wall of its building.

One of the many incredible participants, Tien. You can read more about her and the other participants on www.wearehingham.com.

Hingham Unity Council hosted “A Community Conversation” at the South Shore Music Conservatory. This was a facilitated conversation lead by Liora Norwich of the Network for Social Justice.

Break out sessions allowed participants the opportunity to delve into more meaningful conversations in smaller groups.

June, 2022

Untold Brewery hosted the banner during its pop up at The Green at Derby Street Shops where folks gathered to casually socialize.

October, 2022

Hingham High School hung a banner on the athletics field during its highly anticipated play off season.

January, 2023

Krigsman Yoga held a FREE community class with the banner as a back drop. It was a beautiful event and very well attended.

Special thanks to: Assembly Showroom, Derby Street Shops, Clandestine Kitchen, Hingham Unity Council,  Hingham Historical Society, Hingham Institution for Savings,  Intrinsic Provisions, J|A Living, Krigsman Yoga, Lisa Corrado Design, Salty Days Fish Co., South Shore Conservatory, Untold Brewing, Weston Graphics, White Magdelena House, and The Hingham Anchor.

And of course my mentors, Mary Beth Meehan and Ruddy Roye , and fellow photographers via the Social Documentary Network class, “Breaking and Remaking.” This is where the idea was born and encouraged! THANK YOU.
